Some of you (I would hope most) have fond memories of Adventures in Babysitting, a gem of a movie from 1987. I have seen it at least 50 times thanks to my brother's still unrequited crush on Elisabeth Shue...and really? Can you blame him? I mean, I wouldn't go gay for her or anything but she's pretty hot. Moving on. I have some terrible news for you. Disney is remaking Adventures in Babysitting. As if this wasn't bad enough, there's more - Raven Symone is going to star. I don't know too much about her other than she's got a tv show where she's the sassy funny girl. This does not bode well for the remake. One of the reasons AIB was so entertaining was that Chris Parker (Shue's character) was such an everyday normal girl in extraordinary circumstances. She didn't get cutesy or sassy to get out of the scrapes she found herself in. And what exactly are they going to do with the (fantastic) scene where Chris and the babysittees find themselves in an inner city dive bar where she has to get up on stage to sing the blues to ensure their safe exit?
I generally don't like remakes at all. I can't think of a single one right now that I truly enjoyed (I'm sure you'll correct me). The movie being remade is usually dumbed down from the original or doesn't work in the current climate because what made the original so good was the commentary on society at the time. Look at some of the classic teen movies from the '80s. Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, Weird Science - really any of the John Hughes movies pre-Beethoven. None of these greats would be good if made today.
